We'd been keeping an eye on the weather forecast for the week and it wasn't looking good for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday... with this in mind and as it was pretty overcast when we got up, we'd planned a shorter, lower walk from Grasmere in case it did start really raining on us. I'm glad we did too, as it did rain on us a bit.

We were up and about a bit earlier today and drove to Grasmere. We wandered around the village a little bit looking for the toilets and to find the bakery to get some lunch. We found some yummy looking pasties. We then walked up the path past Allen Bank (now NT, was briefly a home of William Wordsworth). It was a nice path to start with again, with some nice views to the north of Grasmere and as we went round to the west too. Once round past Allen Bank, we headed up a path between two walls, which got quite rocky and steep. We followed it past Score Crag and up the hill, when it started drizzling on us a bit more...

I thought we had missed the path turning across Wray Gill at one point, as I hadn't seen it, but it was fine. It was quite a clearly defined path all the way up. The gill was pretty too, once across it, we were on a fairly flat (ish - this is the Lakes !) plateau following the path round behind some crags, heading for Silver How. We deviated off the path slightly to get to the summit, the last little bit being a bit of a climb again. Once at the summit, it would have been a fantastic view, if the weather had been good. We could see Grasmere and Rydal Water though. We didn't stay long at thte summit and dropped down back onto the path, which ran through a gap between the summit and another crag and dropped straight down the hill.

Once in this gap, it was a bit sheltered so we found some comfortable rocks to sit on and eat lunch. It was quite a steep descent initially, which being rocky in places and grassy in others was also quite slippery after the rain. We did see several others out on this fell, maybe because of the weather and we saw some who were clearly not prepared for walking in the hills.

It was a quick descent into Grasmere and the weather had improved a little bit too. We also bought some gingerbread from the old school, now the Grasmere Gingerbread shop. We then went into Ambleside to the Apple Pie Cafe for apple pie and tea and then spent lots of money in Gaynors...

Today's walk was shorter - 4.7kms and 357m of climb.
